Episode 55 “Kindergarten Sensei”

In this episode, Mike and Gene interview Ramon Hernandez, from New Jersey Judo, who is also known as the Kindergarten Sensei. I have to admit, when I first saw his site, I was on the fence about it, but after talking to him, I fully believe that he has a great program established and is doing great things to market our wonderful sport and martial art known as  judo.  In fact, after the interview, I immediately signed up for his newsletter, as I am seriously looking at trying to establish a similar program here.  For anyone looking for ways to establish school related programs, or someone wanting an option to do judo full time for a living, you really should check out his site and newsletter.  In fact, Ramon has donated a newsletter memberships to listeners of the podcast.  Comment in the area below and you are immediately entered to win.  Below is a little more on Ramon from his site.

Ramon Hernandez started his martial arts training in September 1994 where he was introduced to Judo, Jujitsu & Karate.  Once convinced Judo was the sport and martial art of his choice, he enrolled at the Cranford Judo Center in January 1997 under the guidance of Yoshisada Yonezuka (US Olympic Head Coach 1992-Barcelona Summer Games & US Olympic Head Coach 1988-Seoul Summer Games).  During his time with Sensei Yonezuka, Ramon earned his first degree Judo Black Belt/Rank of Shodan within a time span of 3 years and 8 months in August 2000.  During that time, Ramon married his wife Norma on July 16, 1999 and were awaiting the arrival of their first child in December 2000.

After earning his first Black Belt, he continued his training with Anthony Camal of Camal Judo.  Here he was able to earn his second degree Black Belt/Rank of Nidan and get plenty of practical teaching experience with children as young as 4 years old, teens and adults of all ages.

With 12 years in the martial arts and most of it within Judo, Ramon had settled down in Pompton Lakes, NJ with his wife and now 2 children, Ramon Jr. and Gabriel.  At this time, Ramon found his new aspiration to start North Jersey Judo with the idea to pass along Judo and his Judo philosophy to both his sons and anyone interested in a sport and a martial art for life.

During his 2 year existence as Head Instructor, Ramon has had the honor and pleasure of teaching Judo to a number of children and adults with great success.  This experience includes North Jersey Judo students competing at the local and regional level Judo tournaments with plenty of trips to the medal stand.  This also includes himself as he continues to work on his own Judo.  Other successes that his students enjoy have been weight loss, reduced stress and getting into great mental and physical shape.

  1. Very interesting program! I hope this makes a big splash. Keep opening doors. Remember, I got your name from the homeschool letter. The more info you get out there, the better!

  2. Ramon, Great job as always. Ramon runs a great Judo program for the kids. My son refused to wrestle or play any sports because he was very shy and timid. That all came to an end once he entered Ramons Dojo and was introduced to Judo. He can’t get enough of it and that is all he talks about with his friends. Thank you Ramon and you run a wonderful program and North Jersey Judo.

  3. Great podcast Ramon! Well, like I tell Carson, he will be a

member of North Jersey Judo for years to come. He has come

such a long way in the past 3 years and really looks up to you.

Your program transitioned him right into wrestling without

hesitation. Lucas is following in his footsteps nicely.

You have a wonderful program. Keep up the great work!

  4. Ramon,

Great job. You just keep going and growing. You have done great things for the sport as well as my family. We are very proud of you. Go North Jersey Judo!
